For our second Motion Design studio course, we were tasked with developing a visually captivating title sequence that highlights techniques acquired in previous motion coursework. This project included developing a central narrative for your fictional television show/movie titles, storyboarding, mood boards, motion tests, and a final sequence review. My title sequence for my fictional series concept 'The Experience', evaluates a future where artificiality replaces individuality through a surreal visual journey.
SERIES SYNOPSIS: In a dystopian 2039, a disillusioned social media agent unknowingly becomes the first subject of a corporate AI integration program as an actor trained off decades of screen media, erasing his identity and turning him into an expendable asset. As fragments of his past life resurface, he must navigate a web of corporate conspiracy and intense media scrutiny to reclaim who he once was.
Sketch Storyboarding
Early on during the development of this project, I was set on constructing my narrative through five/six interconnected segments through zoom-in/out, dividing, and abstraction among the elements across the sequence.
Mood Board
As inspiration for this project, I consulted Pinterest to guide the style of my sequence. Textures of construction paper & film prints spoke to the analog look. and the vibrant surrealist & abstract imagery helped me understand how to portray the relationship between the individual and media in my narrative.
Typography/Color
Style Frame / Compositing Process
Throughout my sequence, I implemented many layering/compositing techniques in After Effects to elevate the analog/handmade feel of each frame. I overlayed a series of seven alternating frames of paper textures throughout to illustrate this look as demonstrated in the above comparison. In addition, all illustrative elements I brought motion to have a grain/paper texture added to give dimension to the layered elements.
The above breakdown demonstrates an additional use of layering through chromatic aberration, which is utilized in text transitions and movements throughout the sequence. Breaking down the red/green/blue layers of this distorted figure and then layering (Lighten/Color Dodge/Overlay) helps build the narrative of individuality vs artificial identity.
